Why Equitable Development Matters
Cities are transitioning at a rapid rate to accommodate the influx of residents with the means to chase after cities that meet their lifestyle preferences and not solely beholden to the availability of jobs.
Today 54% of the world's population live in urban areas, projected to go up to 66% by 2050* [Source: United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (2016)]
Almost 64% of college-educated (25-to 34-year-olds) said that they looked for a job after they chose the city where they wanted to live. [Source: Harvard Business Review, May 2010]
The unprecedented inversion of population change to a majority-minority nation creates a mandate to develop pathways and opportunities for those currently residing in cities.
The demographics of the US are currently undergoing a shift and by 2060, the so-called minority population is expected to rise to 56%, compared with 38% in 2014 [Source: Census Bureau]
While urban planning is driven by undeniable economic forces, inclusive development is an imperative for American cities.
